I thought I would visit after a long time, but have learnt plenty...
Here are some on page SEO optimization techniques, which I have used to increase visitors to my blogs. Because the web is becoming cluttered, duplicated (many are "re spinning" articles), competitive, and with changing user visitor patterns (e.g. Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and authoritative shopping sites, e.g. Trademe for NZ), many blogs/sites (except authority sites) are semi isolated, I believe in the "middle" of the internet. I have learnt SEO which has boosted visitors. These are on page tips I actively employ - and it works, as most blogs I have targeted for NZ market have ranked within the first 3 pages within 3 months. Except for the very competitive niches (Hotels, Designer Clothes, Loans, - which need intensive "off page" optimization - generally the hardest part.) On Page Optimization Tips - Keyword research and diversity - Include phrases what searchers are looking for (try to offer a solution). I use Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Word Tracker. Also include synonyms, related terms (semantics). - Meta Description Tag - To effectively describe what your site is about. This is important if their are many other similar search results (I know as my post on How to increase blog traffic (in my sig below) has many other similar posts. My post has ranked No. 1 for about 8 months). - H1 tags/bold - This signals to Google the important points in your site. - URL structure/title - Try include your keyword in the structure(s), but authoritative sites without url key words can also rank (e.g. Amazon) - Internal linking - You may want to refer to similar posts on a popular posts to refer your visitors. (often called related pages) - ALT tags for your images using your main keywords. I also use "title" tags as well. Captions may also help because adjacent to image. - Content - Ideally unique with quality (to engage readers) and at perhaps 300 words or more. "Pillar posts" attract Google. I just read Google (March 2010) are targeting (and removing, de-indexing, or adsense removal) sites, using their adsense ads, that are thin in content, with too few posts. - Keyword Density - use in URL, title, first paragraph, middle, and end paragraph - but lightly sprinkled throughout. Perhaps 5 % density for your main keyword. - For large sites use a site map, to make navigation easier. Also Google maps (and claim it) for a business. I get visitors from my user created maps. - Use "User generated content" for your visitors. I read, including a small game increased visitor times and conversions, sign ups, etc. I think Facebook does this. Consider "bread crumbs" navigation. User content generation is about landing page optimization to retain your visitors. There is also the rich snippets micro data formats to consider, which Google now supports. Landing page optimization is becoming important to retain and internally direct visitors- not go away instantly. - Google Tools - Use and evaluate Google analytics stats (perhaps create custom segments, evaluate keywords that increase visitors. Also use Webmaster Tools - now upgraded a bit to include search page rankings, impressions, and clicks. Diagnostics now includes your website load time - which Google says may have a effect on your page rankings in the serps. There is also the lessor known Google Website Optimizer; Also Google Insights (for trending overseas searches), Google Trends, Hot Trends, and the revamped Google Ad Planner. These are rolled in as yet another lessor known Google tool Zeilgeist. Also Google Sets and Google Squared to get phrase/grouped keyword combination's. SEO is ongoing, and subscribing to SEO sites like search engine land and search engine journal, and others has helped me a lot. They have experienced contributors, submitting topics about SEO, Adwords, Keyword/Search tools. I learnt many techniques from United States keyword research, and tutorials, because their user search market is so march larger (in some cases searches are 50 to 1000 times than NZ for many equivalent searches), more diversified, and more targeted than in NZ.
